Happy Mathgiving

Espero vuestros comentarios.

Thanksgiving

Hello students,
It´s almost the end of November and that means that Thanksgiving is almost here! I am especially excited this year because my little sister is here in Spain with me and that means that we can celebrate the day together. There will be lots of good food (turkey, cranberry sauce, gravy, stuffing, etc...)
Where I live, the trees are now beginning to shed their leaves and prepare for winter. However, before they do that they put on quite a show with their multi-colored splendor. There are lines of trees with leaves the color of gold. There are also red, orange and yellow colored leaves.
Sometimes when children´s parents are finished raking the leaves in the yard they make a big pile and the children get to jump into it! It is so much fun! I really love this time of year.
So, I hope you will enjoy the Thanksgiving presentation that I have prepared for you. I enjoyed making it. See you soon!

Hypatia of Alexandria and her friends.

Hypatia of Alexandria (370 – 415) was a Greek philosopher who lived in Alexandria (Egypt, Roman Empire). She was the best in mathematics and astronomy in her time.
Hypatia wrote about Euclid (300 BC), who also had lived in Alexandria seven centuries before. He was a Greek mathematician know as the "Father of Geometry." He wrote a book called “Elements” which has been the most influential work in the history of mathematics. It is about geometry, perspective, conic sections, spherical geometry, number theory, etc.
She knew Aristarchus of Samos (310-230 BC) theories about the heliocentric model of the solar system, with the Sun in the center of the universe.
Hypatia also wrote about Eratosthenes of Cyrene (195 BC), who was a very good friend of Arquimedes. Eratosthenes was a Greek mathematician, geographer and astronomer. He was the first who exposed a system of latitude and longitude to represent the Earth. He also calculated the circumference of the Earth with great accuracy. Do you want to know how?
But this tradition had begun with Pythagoras of Samos (570- 495 BC), a Greek philosopher known as "the father of numbers” He was a great mathematician and scientist. Do you know what the Pythagorean teorema is?

CULTURE QUIZ - Hallowe'en ( Part 2)

Who was Hypatia?

Now you know something about Hypatia of Alexandria (370 – 415), she was a very good Greek philosopher who lived in Alexandria (Egypt, Roman Empire). She was great in mathematics and astronomy. If you want to know something else about this excellent woman, watch the following video:

Hallowe'en (Part 1)

Do you know Michael Jackson? He died recently and he was front page in all newspapers and magazines and news programmes. In the 1980s he was the "King of Pop" and one of his songs, "Thriller", became a real hit and a number 1 all around the world. "Thriller" is played every year when Hallowe'en comes. You may have seen the film already, but do you know what it is about?
Switch off the lights, turn up the volume and enjoy it!

And now, some practice. Here is the link to the exercises we couldn't do last week because the Internet wasn't working. Revise the vocabulary and do the exercises called "Riddles", " I spy with my little eye..." and the "Crossword".

Have fun!

Rafa

Did you ever imagine you would have an American penpal? Think about it.

Can you tell me why it is a good idea to have a penpal from an English-speaking country?

Let's try to find some relationship between Maths and Montoro Festival. I can imagine some examples like geometric figures, prices,... If you want, you can also add some images.

Of course, everybody can comment the posts.

Bilingual Group first photo

¡Bienvenidos/as al nuevo blog!

Los/as alumnos/as respondieron estupendamente y pasamos un buen rato.

¿Que te pareció? Deja tus comentarios.

Welcome to the new blog.

Last thursday Brittany met the students with some activities. She is helping us with the bilingual project. You can see her explaining some aspects about the US. Students liked it, and so do we!
