The Waiter

Three men in a cafe order a meal the total cost of which is $15. They each contribute $5. The waiter takes the money to the chef who recognizes the three as friends and asks the waiter to return $5 to the men.

The waiter is not only poor at mathematics but dishonest and instead of going to the trouble of splitting the $5 between the three he simply gives them $1 each and pockets the remaining $2 for himself.

Now, each of the men effectively paid $4, the total paid is therefore $12. Add the $2 in the waiters pocket and this comes to $14.....

Where has the other $1 gone from the original $15?

  1. Teacher... I don´t understand this very well...
I think that the aswer is:
-Money paid is $15,but return them $5,
    so they paid $10.
    -Money returned is $3.
    -The waiter is $3.
    -Total money is $15.

  3. The restaurant has tHe money. I can explain so:

I think the operation is wrong. The good operation is:

The three men pay $5: 5x3=15
The chef rest $5 because he was a friend: 15-5=10

The other five, the waiter distributed between he and the three men. He give $1 to the men and 2$ for him: 5-2=3 3:3=1 per man

So : 10 for the restaurant, 3 for the men and 2 for the waiter: 10+3+2=15

Ah I had to do the problem with pieces of paper and I imagined that they were $$!!

    Bye Bye!! =))

  4. I think that the last part it's wrong.

    The three men pay 15
The chef ask to the waiter to returns them five, so it cost 10
and the other five are 2 for the waiter and three to the men
    10+3+2=15

  6. The solution is :
The 3 men , at the end pay $12 because although the chef wanted give back $5 the waiter kept with $2.
So now, three men have $1 each one, the waiter has $2 and the restaurant have $10.
    -15+5-2= -12.

  9. i think that two paid 4$ because if they paid 15$ and the chef remains 2$.
two persons paid 4$ and the chef remains 2$ the other person paid 5$

  10. First they paid 15$, the waiter takes 2$, now there are 13$, in this moment each one pays 4´33$ but the waiter gives 1$ to each one, then each one pays 3´33.
