Time zones and time changes

As you probably know we live in a divided world in terms of time.

What time is it? This appears to be an easy question
but in reality it is more complicated.

You will have to look at this information provided by BBC News,
and then you will answer these questions at home, using the comments:

• How many time zones are there in the world?
• How many time zones are there in Spain? How many in Europe?
• What are the circumstances of the girl in Indiana (USA)?
• What time is it now in Antartica?
• When and why do we change our time twice a year, moving  forward or backward our clocks by one hour?
• What is the International Date Line?
• How many time zones did Russia have before the country decided to reduce them to nine?
• In the International Space Station the astronauts can see a lot of sunsets and sunrises. How many of them every day?

THE POWERFUL FORCES OF NATURE

A natural disaster is the consequence of the combination of a natural hazard (a physical event like a volcanic eruption, an earthquake, a landslide...) and human activities. Only if humans are there where the hazard happens and they have no sufficient emergency management, there will be human losses.

Natural disasters come in many shapes and sizes. Most are related to the weather. Some are predictable, like a hurricane. Some like an earthquake, surprise us. Although disasters themselves aren't fun, learning about them is!

Find out about a recent natural disaster and make a report about it with photos and statistics.

¡VAMOS A COMPLEMENTARNOS!

Como sabéis, en clase hemos empezado a estudiar los complementos del predicado, en concreto, el C. Directo y el C. Indirecto. Pues bien, os propongo que cada uno construya una oración en la que aparezca uno de estos complementos, cuyo contenido tenga que ver con nosotros mismos o compañeros de clase, eso sí !utilizando el humor pero, en ningún caso, deben aparecer faltas de respeto! -ya que serán sancionadas-. Además, podemos confeccionar otra oración en la que aparezca alguno de estos complementos, pero cuyo significado sea absurdo; es decir, una oración gramaticalemente correcta, pero semánticamente no. Ahí van las mías:

1. Silvia toma la pastilla de vitaminas, cada mañana: la pastilla de vitaminas = C.D


2. El alumnado de 2ºB come grandes pianos en la hora del recreo: grandes pianos = C.D

1. Qui fait la cuisine chez toi?

Si c'est ta mère qui prépare le répas d'habitude, tu peux lui faire un petit cadeau: prends le tablier et prépare un petit plat pour elle !

2. Choisis la recette que tu aimes le plus et fais une liste des ingrédients que tu dois acheter. N'oublie pas d'utiliser les partitifs.

International Women's Day is marked on the 8th of March every year. It is a major day of global celebration of women. In different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women to a celebration for women's economic, political and social achievements.

Amelia Earhart
She was born in 1897 in Kansas (USA). During World War I she worked as a nurse, and later she started to teach immigrant children the English language. But her passion was flying. She learnt to fly in 1920. In 1928 she became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean and in 1932 she flew across it solo. Then in 1937 she set out to fly around the world. But she disappeared when she was flying above New Guinea. Amelia and her plane were never found.

Diophantus

Little is known about the life of Diophantus. He lived in Alexandria, Egypt, probably from between 200 and 214 to 284 or 298 AD. Much of our knowledge of the life of Diophantus is derived from a 5th century Greek anthology of number games and strategy puzzles. One of the problems (sometimes called his epitaph) states:

'Here lies Diophantus,' the wonder behold.

Through art algebraic, the stone tells how old:

'God gave him his boyhood one-sixth of his life, (x/6)

One twelfth more as youth while whiskers grew rife; (x/12)

And then yet one-seventh ere marriage begun; (x/7)

In five years there came a bouncing new son. (5)

Alas, the dear child of master and sage

After attaining half the measure of his father's life (x/2) chill fate took him. After consoling his fate by the science of numbers for four years, he ended his life.' (4)

The red expresions shows the translations from words to algebraic language. Being x the years that Diophantus lived, you need to add up all the expresions above to find out the answer.

TASK: You have to write the equation and the age of Diophantus when he passed here, but you need to give me a sheet of paper with the calculations made.
